If you’re one of those people who love snow in Minnesota, we can’t relate – however, you should know that your roof is not a fan of the snow. While snow may look pretty, it can wreak some serious havoc and damage on your roof. As an owner of a commercial building with a weak roof, you don’t want to be held liable for any kind of damage or accident that may occur due to the increased snowfall and lack of preparation.

It can cause a roof to collapse

Have you ever held an icicle or a snowball? It isn’t exactly light! When you have a lot of snowfall, the snow, and ice weigh pretty heavily on the roof. And sometimes that weight becomes too much for the roof to bear, causing it to collapse or cave in. In a more appealing scenario, it’ll only cause some structural damage.

Cracks, mold, and mildew

When there’s snowfall and ice, there’s often a freeze and thaw cycle that occurs shortly after. When the snow or ice thaws, it becomes water (just so we’re on the same page). When it turns liquid, it can then fill cracks and crevices, re-freeze which then can cause more damage and just also simply lead to mold and mildew.

The danger and hazards of Icicles

Icicles – how can they possibly be dangerous? In the event that you have a large icicle hanging from your roof and it then falls down, it could injure someone. Icicles also can be an indicator to a much larger roofing problem, like blockages in your gutters, etc.

Ice Dams

Ice dams are similar to the problem with the freeze-and-thaw cycle, but specifically when it occurs under shingles and causes damage there. When water is trapped under your shingles, it causes leaks. As you can imagine, leaking inside your commercial building is not a good thing.

It’s simply an amplifier

Any structural or general roofing issue or damage you may have is exacerbated by snow and ice. And the longer you wait to get it fixed, the bigger the cost and risk to those who are inside of the building. Whether you already have a leak going on or a crack in your roof, snow and ice will most likely not help when added to the equation. Doing some regular maintenance and having roof damage be taken care of promptly makes all the difference.
